Collagen for women: what the evidence says and how to choose
There is no «collagen for women» different from men's; what changes is the marketing. What has been studied in women, what is known about menopause and what precautions to take.
A «collagen for women» isn't something different
Products advertised «for women» are usually the same hydrolyzed collagen with different packaging and different claims (hair, nails, skin). Read the supplement facts: grams of collagen per serving, source and extras. That label counts more than the name.
What has been studied in women
Much of the research on collagen and skin was done in women: a 2021 review of 19 studies and 1,125 participants was 95% women and found small to moderate improvements in skin hydration and elasticity. In one trial of menopausal women, a group that took 5 g of fish collagen for six months improved skin elasticity by about 12% compared with before starting.
Those are figures from specific trials: many are small and some are funded by the manufacturer, so the sensible expectation is a modest effect.
Menopause, bones and joints
There is also a randomized trial in postmenopausal women that studied bone density with collagen peptides. It is a single study and isn't enough to say collagen prevents fractures or replaces calcium, vitamin D, exercise or the treatment your doctor prescribes. For joints and for hair and nails, the evidence is smaller and less consistent than for skin.
How to choose
Apply the same criteria as for any collagen: grams per serving (studies used 2.5 to 10 g a day), a source that suits you, no extras that only raise the price and, if there is one, a third-party testing seal. Compare the options in our comparison and read the main guide on how not to fall for the marketing.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and other precautions
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take medication, have an existing condition or are allergic to fish, eggs or shellfish (depending on the collagen's source), check with your doctor or a dietitian first. A supplement is no substitute for a varied diet.
