Silicone breast forms: how to choose size, material and fit

A guide to choosing a silicone breast form or prosthesis (mastectomy, trans people, crossdressers, cosplay): size, weight, support and care.

Who they're for and why choosing well matters

Silicone breast forms are used by people who have had a mastectomy, by trans and gender-diverse people looking for a silhouette they feel comfortable with, by crossdressers, and by anyone who needs them for theater, photography or cosplay. The reason differs but the question is the same: how to get size, weight and fit right without overspending.

If it's after a mastectomy

After surgery, your medical team or a prosthetist (a specialist in external prostheses) can tell you when it is safe to wear a silicone form and which one suits your scar. Lighter pieces are usually recommended at first.

In the United States, federal law requires many plans that cover mastectomy to cover prostheses as well. Ask your insurer before paying out of pocket.

How to choose the size

Measure around the fullest part of the bust and just below it, then compare with the seller's chart, because every brand calculates cup size its own way. If you're between two sizes, the smaller is usually more comfortable and more natural.

Think about proportion too: a form should harmonize with your shoulders, back and height, not just the cup.

Weight and comfort

Silicone is heavy, and a large cup is felt in the shoulders and back after a few hours. A well-supporting bra spreads the load. If you'll wear it for many hours, try a lighter or smaller piece first.

How they stay in place

There are three ways: in the pocket of an adapted bra, with an adhesive strip on the skin, or simply inside a regular bra. If you use adhesive, test a small patch on your skin first in case it irritates.

Care so it lasts

Wash with warm water and mild unscented soap, rinse well and pat dry with a clean towel. Store it in its case, away from heat and sharp objects. Extreme heat and direct sun deform it.

Before you buy

Check the skin tones available, whether it's sold as one piece or a pair, the weight, reviews with photos and the return policy for that item. Buying on Amazon allows returns in many cases, but always check the exact conditions.
